As far as I'm aware, the plastic panels are painted much in the same way as the rest of the car.
It can only help adding the lacquer, as it will restore whatever remains of the basecoat.
If it is very deep though, you will need to apply more than one coat, so it can be a long repair process.
As the brighter nights appear, it may be a case of spending a half hour each night after work - better than cutting grass anyway.
Post a pic, and I'll be in a better position to advise further.
