Renault Traffic Recirculating Air (or not!)

My recirculating air switches LED remains lit constantly, in either switch position.

I have checked the switch operates correctly, and it does.

The cable from the switch to fan assembly under the bonet is the cause - If I disconnect the cable at the fan assembly the LED goes out, and will operate as it should when the switch is turned on and off. The cable going to the fan assembly is a switched negative (the recirculating switch places this cable to earth when on).

The fan assembly always pulls in fresh air from outside and will not divert to recirculating.

It appears something in the fan assebly is faulty, but I thought rather than remove it to see (looks a big task) I would ask if anyone has seen similar problems and what the likely cause is, and if it can be fixed easily, or if a new fan assebly or part of it is required.

Any clues would be great.
