Well, you'd be surprised how much the lacquer helps blend it in.

I dilute the lacquer with thinners down to around 20-25% concentration, which prevents it drying and dragging along the surface whilst it is being applied.

In fact, unless the scratch is so deep it has broken clean through the paint, I use this solution first, then only apply the paint where its required (thus keeping the repair area as small as possible). I've actually repaired all the scratches on a car using this technique, and only needed the paint I'd made up for stonechips.

It can be difficult getting metallic paint just 'right' as the colour you see is so dependent upon the aluminium flakes aligning themselves with the surrounding paint. I call it the 'velour sofa effect' - its like running your fingers across a velour sofa - the colour appears 'different' (usually darker) - the fibres haven't changed at all - its just that the light bounces off the surface at a different frequency-thus, your eye registers it as a different shade.
