If you really want the space comfort and style of an Espace, then you'll buy one regardless of their reliability record.
I would recommend a manual car for reliability and go for a petrol engine as they are more plentiful. I have had three V6 petrols in a row. All have need new auto boxes, two have needed the instrument pack replacing £500, and two have needed the air bags computer replacing (another £500).
To change the cambelt or spark plugs on a 3 litre V6, the engine needs to be removed which is very expensive - my last one was £1300.
So, in all, I'd say a 2 litre manual petrol is your safest, but least exciting, bet. Get the electrics checked!!
