There are sometimes signs that a turbo is going,other times they just decide enough it enough and fail.

Common tell-tales are a whistling as the turbo spools up, oil leaks around the turbo system,or sometimes running problems under load.A turbo should be more or less silent in operation,if you can hear a varying high pitched noise when driving the car,then I would start worrying.

The big give away is usually when they fail completely and start sucking the oil from the sump and the engine revs it's 'nads off!.The only way to stop it is to stall the engine.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
