17" alloys ruin fuel consumption???

Hi, Newbie here....
I got a 58reg Meg dci106 Techrun, and am unhappy with its fuel economy.
This my second Meg. Last one was dci100 Expression.
It averaged 58mpg and on a good mway run got 70+.
The new one averages about 48mpg, best so far on mway was 56mpg. I've done about 12k so far.
I always drive with a soft foot so thought I'd get aven better mpg with this new car.
My Renault dealer can find nothing wrong and says the 17" alloys are to blame. I knew these would effect slightly, but surely not by 20%+.
I only got 17's to firm up the ride as wife and kids got travel sick in previous Meg.

Will 17" alloys really have that much of a negative effect on mpg????
