When you press the start button, the starter won't engage until the glow plugs are warm. Your new battery is doing a much better job of supplying he glow plugs so they heat up faster and the starter is engaged sooner.
Certainly sounds like the old battery was on it's way out!
EDIT: Just reread your post! - If you wait for the glow plug light to go out first, then the starter will engage as soon as you press the button. Same principle though - new battery turning starter motor quicker = faster start!
