Hello and welcome to the forum.
There are so many things that cause suspension knocks on Laguna 2's that it's a job to know where to start to be honest, but lower joints,anti-roll bar links, top strut mountings and worn steering arms are some of the favorites. If it is the play in the rack causing the knock then theres no need to panic, the arms are available seperately so these can be replaced without the need to replace the whole rack. It's unusual for them to cause a knock though, they move side to side and obviously the knock is caused when the wheel is hit up or dropped down over bumps so you have to suspect the suspension system somewhere rather then the steering system.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
