They're not mandatory replacements, people always think servicing is good value for money because you get x, y & z etc, truth is that beyond an oil and oil filter change anything else is only done if it's absolutely warranted. If you plan on keeping the car til it dies then it doesn't pay to maintain service history, the only real value it adds is resale, anything else can be done on your path yourself without too much effort or knowledge.

As for the question, too many variables and not enough information - even not exceeding 60mph on a motorway can be expensive if you accelerate to it in 10 seconds. The key is gentle and smooth, no unecessary braking or gear changes, change up around 2000rpm and stay at or near 56-60mph and you should get the optimum extra urban mileage quoted, possibly even more - if it's markedly different then it points to a problem but at the moment it's impossible to say.
