Hi Michael and a very warm welcome to the forum.
I would think that you may have a dodgy earthing strap. Make sure that the terminals on the battery are very secure and cannot be moved, then check the earth wires.
As a temporary measure you can use a jump lead connected the the battery's earth teminal and connect to a secure part of the engine (ie the engine lifting eye bracket) and try to start the car. If the car starts you can be sure it is the earth strap. If this fails to cure it I would say you have a tired starter motor.
From memory there is one between the bodywork and the gearbox bolted to the car chassis. But I can't be sure if there are any more.
Hope this helps. Kind regards Oily.
