1. don't worry about the finance aspect - you still have your statutory rights.
2. paying for your own insurance is normal - we had the same practice at Ford.
3. dealership could have hired you an mpv (even something non-renault) as you had extenuating circumstances (the trip), and you have a vehicle (which they supplied), which is unsafe, and you have lost all faith in. Plus, the increased miles the trip would have incurred on your car, would ironically mean there's a chance you'd have a mileage charge - if this car is replaced, rather than repaired. Plus - if it's the dealership group I think it is - they have a massive business hiring cars/vans/minibuses anyway...
Poor timing (with the holidays), but make a big noise about this (what car magazine, which, watchdog, local papers/radio), the more the merrier.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
