The pump has a valve which open or closes depending on which option is selected. It could eother be dirty or broken but it is definitely worth trying to empty the reservoir and giving the sytem a flush with hot water (hand hot is sufficient). You may have to do this a number of times though but much easier than removing the pump - worth a try in my view.
I use an old turkey baster with a piece of extension tube as a syphon
