Is the RX4 a dCi?.If so,pumping the pedal with the engine running will make the pedal get hard and the braking force reduced as the servo vaccum pump won't be able to keep up.

I'd do as advised and fully bleed the system,then see what the pedal is like.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
