I'd give the ignition barrel a blast with an air duster first off.
From memory there is a kind of latching mechanism in the barrel that detects the presence of the key.
Usually this is to allow things like the windows to still work once you have turned the car off until you pull the key out, but conversly in your case it could be used to light up the dash until you turn the key.
