The latching mechanism, certainly in my 2001 Scenic is really quite unsophisticated. As you push the key in, it moves a bar that basically tells the ignition barrel the key is present. It works whether it is the correct key or not.
As I said previously, it is used on the Scenic to allow power to remain to the windows when the ignition is switched off but the key remains in the barrel.
Not having any experience of Espaces I don't know if the same applies but I could see how it could be used to initialise the dash when a key was inserted.
(You hear a small clunk when you pull the key out, which is the latch moving)
