Possible solution

In answer to my own thread, I have fixed one of those magnetic cupboard catches to the top inside of the filler housing using strong sticky fixers and small self-tapping screws. I have put the metal keeper bar onto the inside of the fuel flap using strong sticky fixers.

It seems to be working nicely for now and doesn't get in the way when you fill up.

It's not the most elegant solution but it was cheap and it seems to do the job!
