Scenic 2004 Battery jacket

I have just fitted a new battery to our 2004 Scenic. It is the correct battery and fits nicely into the battery tray but it is slightly bigger (60Ah in place of 47Ah). My question is that the old original one had a loose jacket around it made of a black corrugated plastic material. As the new battery is slightly longer the jacket will not go around it. What is this jacket meant to do? I guess it only costs Renault a few pennies (or cents) but I am sure they would not put it in unless it is necessary. Is it to keep it cool/warm or flame retardant? Please advise.
Having grown up with Blue Peter, I could perhaps almost make it fit if it is needed.
