Brake drums are difficult to upgrade due to there design but renewing the cylinders, shoes and drums will make a lot of difference.
Similarly with the front a new set of calipers along with good quality disc and pads will help.
I take it the calipers are original. There ain't much point in asking 12 year old calipers or master cylinder to do extra work. Unless you have ABS upgrading the brakes could just make the wheels lock that much sooner
