Spongy Brakes

Yip have changed pads on a (rover) 200 before but never had to bleed brakes in the past, plus this one is all round disc, had it out yesterday, brakes ok if doing 50 or under, and plenty of time to stop, but in the event of some-one or thing requiring you to stop suddenly, then I am wondering if they will perform, seems that when I apply the brakes the pedal goes to the floor not without a bit of pressure, but it feels like they aren`t stopping quick enough, and that is with the pedal to the floor.
