The switch for the lights is built into the door lock and is a pain in the backside to work on, I would guess that you problem is with the bulbs or bulb holders. On a different post someone suggested replacing the standard bulbs with LED's which apparently worked for the person that tried it.
New bulbs have been fitted and holder conections examined. My Haynes manual wiring shows a route through the fuse box for the open door return. Is this easy to check without disconnecting the battery and losing all memories?
