sensor is located at the top of the gearbox where it meets the engine.The sensor is held on with two 10mm bolts and is usually easy enough to get to.
The end of the sensor is magnetic and metal filings can stick to the end of it blocking it's signal intermittantly.There is a mass of info on the sensor on here as it is a very common fault.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
