It's just a suggestion, albeit an extreme one.
If only done for a fraction of a second it will more than likely only blow a fuse. All the same, I agree with Tinker 2:
There are other ways to figure it out, a cheap replacement scrappy part is the route I'd go down, that way if it isn't the solenoid/motor that is goosed at least it won't have cost you too much and you'll have a spare or a part you can sell on donkeybay.
I only suggested it because I know that these things can jam and need booted back in to life one way or another.
Hopefully someone else will come up with an actual test or other sensible suggestion for you
