Spoke to the wise old man, ChrisM appears to have it on the head in one

He says the most likely cause is an earth problem.

Something about it shorting to positive somewhere and earthing incorrectly, rather than through the body like it should. (engine earth was mentioned - so would check that - the 1 (or 2) that go from the engine block to the body.

That's about as specific I can be as I asked in the passing during a call about something else.

He also said something about resistance and to check the battery terminals are getting a properly good connection. Not quite sure what he meant by that exactly, maybe someone else can elaborate.

hope this helps, if anyone feels like ridiculing what I've said feel free to do so as it seems to be the general theme anyway.... as long as you follow it with something helpful.
