Disabling/Bypassing UCH

This seems to be a common fault and most people just get it replaced but I'm not sure I can justify the 600+ cost when the car is bearly worth that. So....

Megane 1, 98, 1.6e - usual fault (intermittent immob/indicator/windows etc) which I presume is the UCH . Does the UCH communicate back to the ECU , or does it simply accept the ECU 's code and "activate"? If the latter, surely it can be bypassed and replaced? Does anyone have any schematics for it? IF so I may be able to knock up a replacement for it with my own microprocessor, but without it it would take too much work for a weekend.

Any help appreciated
