When you get the tailgate open you can carefully prise out this switch and disconnect it, make sure the wires don't go back into the recess. The switch comes apart to show the connection, mine was a lovely green inside and was so bad I had to get a new switch.

What is happening is that in the beginning sometimes it will unlock and sometimes it won't, it will get worse.

I think but I am not sure that the catch for opening the rear window workis in conjunction with the hatchback opening switch.

Hope this may help you.

I have rebuilt my switch a number of times and dried and cleaned up the contacts with emery board but I fear this time is the last

Did you buy a new one from the dealers and if so how much or where from ?
