There's been debate over whether or not the system is multiplex since the first L2 came out. The clusters themselves are certainly conventionally wired - I've had towbars fitted on both, and you can feed the trailer lights off the individual wires to the lamps as you would on any other car. It's possible that the lights are controlled by a multiplex system further upstream, but considering that even the official Renault towbar wiring loom doesn't use bypass relays, I'm inclined to think that they're fairly conventionally wired.

The towing socket on my phase 2 is wired conventionally by tapping into the lamp wires with ScotchLok's. The socket on my phase 1 used the official Renault loom, which (for 50-ish quid) really just did the same job as the ScotchLoks.
