I can't think of any obvious reason why someone would deliberately disconnect it.It's a long shot,but the tank may have been removed at some stage and the person doing it forgot to refit the pipe??.Is the pipe still in one piece and is it perished at all?.Petrol will eventually eat away at the rubber so it may have damaged the pipe so it came loose??.

Not sure!.

Have you found where both ends reconnect to?

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
