Stiff hinges is a know issue with HP, which leads to fractures in the upper casing.
dunno if wd40 would help to loosen them up a little.
anyway, every time you plug in the laptop it goes through a charge cycle for the battery, so if you only ever use it whilst docked or plugged into the mains then the battery will get repeatedly charged and degraded / develope memory effect.
if you are docked, then charge the battery to 100% then remove it, and using it only when needed.
