I ensure the battery terminals and connectors are very clean and clean further with carb cleaner. Connect it up - check all is working and then a light spray with a lithium based grease which is slightly water repellant. If the terminal is making a snug fit with the battery post no grease can get onto the contact surfaces. I find petroleum jelly not to be very acid resistant in battery areas. There are electric conductive gels which work equally well but are expensive:

The more modern Renault type brass type terminal bases become hardened and lose their elasticity but a light touch with a blow-lamp usually until it a slight green colour and then quenching usually allows you to crimp the tangs back to suit
I have used this technique in the past but mainly in marine applications where replacements are very expensive indeed
