There used to be a indy motor factors near me. It was run by a troll like, biker who looked liked he only washed when riding home in the rain.
The shop was small, dusty and dingy and it was near impossible to find anything, it was also littered with signs telling you where to go if you wanted change.
The owner also had a particular manner with customers. A "gent" walked in one day asking if they had any spare metal.

"In there" was the reply pointing to a box of off cuts

"Would you have any in an L Shape"

"why? Don't you have a hammer and vice"

"Also I'd like some holes in it"

"well put it in a vice, hit it with an 'ammer and drill some 'effin 'oles in it"

"But I don't have any of those"

"Do you own a computer"

customer now slightly dubious " er yes"

"well that's no 'effin good for fixing your 'effin car then is it"

However, if you actually had the ability to bend metal and get dirty this guy was a gem. I once asked for a part for an old car, he asked why I needed that part only to say, "nah, not that bit, you need a *** it's about 50 less and I can get it here today.
The part arrived and was spot on.

That's what you don't get in the big chains
