The boot locking by itself appears to be a bit weird though. It may be worth checking out the fuse boxes for damp or corrosion.
There also may be a possibilty the wiring loom to the
has been damaged or chaffed (a reported fault on some Renaults). What brings me to that possible theory is movement of the engine whilst either in low gear (when you wife was learning) or when reversing (as you did) may have caused the loom to be moved or stretched.
I suggest you have a close look at the wiring loom going into the
although you may have to pewl back some of the external insulation to see the cables within.
