If it's just a plain metal key,then I would have a look behind the steering colomn trim and have a look for the immobiliser ring that should be around the igntion barrel.I suspect someone has had problems and has taped the chip from the old key to the ring,hence you don't need to have it in the key.I've seen a few people do this in the past....
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
