Ok thanks that could well be what has happened - i am not a mechanic in fact i work in an office although i am happy to get my hands dirty. Do you know what connectors i should use to join them?

The reason i mentioned the wiring in general is that the TDC wiring issue prompted me to check the condition of the other wiring in the engine bay and for some reason it looks like it has been disturbed as various sections have the same insulating tape around them. There is also a wire going to the battery that doesn't look standard. I am starting to think that the ECU may have gone and someone has managed to get the car running just to sell it - I am normally very careful when i buy a car and this seemed ok!

I have checked the obvious such as fuel pump, plugs etc but still no luck. When i parked it up it was running lovely.
