You have to remember diagnostic equipment is quite dumb really. If it can't communicate with a particular unit it assumes it has failed when in fact it could be down to a poor connection. It a bit like knocking someones front door and shouting "Is there anybody in" and when you fail to get a reply assume theres no-one there but in fact you find out later the person is deaf. I suggest you check if you are getting a signal from the releveant sensor. This can be done by connecting a multi-meter to the sensor connecting terminals and spinning the wheel the meter should show a pulsating voltage (its probably in the milli-volt range). You should then trace the wiring to the ABS unit and repeat the same procedeure at its connection
