Hi and a very warm welcome to the forum.

If the cam belt has not been changed it is essential that it gets changed asap. The garage is quite right to say that it should be changed after 72,000 miles or 5 (?) years, whichever is the sooner.

There are many horror stories about broken cam belts on the forum, and yes it is possible to destroy the engine.

How long have you had the car? and what is the milage? Do you have any service history with it?
It is possible that the belt may have already been replaced.
If so check how long ago and get back to us.

Hope this helps. Kind regards Oily.
