Auto wipers/light sensor problem (vaseline)?

I've recently had a new windscreen installed in my Clio. The auto lights work fine but the auto wipers are erratic.

I took the sensor off and found vaseline all over the place.

Question is, should I clean off and reinstall or is the vaseline there for a reason (to avoid diffraction at material interfaces or something )?

Any advice would be appreciated.

P.S. I could just get Autoglass back out but if it's simple I'd rather avoid the hassle.
