Interesting, so different from a MAF sensor then? The connectors are shiny bright and the pipe seems fine; there is strong suction and immediately I put my thumb over the end the engine hunts and stalls. Is this unit prone to failure and/or expensive to replace? If it does fail what symptoms does it display?

Could be nothing wrong with it though; just that taking the pipe off masks the problem..?
