If you have access to a multi-meter it may be worth checking the resistance of the temp sensors. Although the figures I give may not be perfectly correct they might help aid in finding the fault.
Cold (20C) = 3550 ohms
Hot (90C) = 250 ohms
Also check the wiring connections a known problem area

One final question before I get oily Noel, where is the
sensor on this engine please? Would it cause the symptoms I describe and is it worth a quick cleanup?
