As you can read, the Mk1 Laguna is one of the better Renault models of recent times and it was such a shame when the Laguna 2 came out it wasn't in the same mould.

The gearboxes can give problems, but this is more common on dTi models or down to oil leaks around the nearside driveshaft gaiter.I would avoid automatics if at all possible, they are very troublesome.

As said, check the cambelt history as the 16 valve engines in paricular are run pretty close with there 72k/5 year change limit. The 16 valve engines can be noisy and unrefined, but they are pretty strong, coil problems are very common but these are cheap to buy and easy to DIY replace.

The tank straps can corrode although the phase 2's have much stronger ones than the phase 1's.

Apart from all of that, they are very good car and you will be hard pushed to find a more comfortable car in any class.I've had 3 of them in the past and bar a couple of gearbox failures on the dTi's they have been really good cars.I'd have one over a similar aged Mondeo,Vectra,406 etc.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
