Replacement power steering parts, now immobiliser cut usage

Question about my parents' Modus.

A couple of weeks ago, their power steering failed. They took it to a local mechanic who sourced a used replacement part/unit and they had it fitted.

Then, last week, they were out shopping, and when they returned to the car, it wouldn't start.

They're now being told its because the immobiliser thinks/know they've replaced whichever part it was, and the computerised whatsit won't accept it.

Their Renault dealer's told them that they have to get another, NEW steering part and then tell the computer that it's been put in.

I'm tempted to think that if the computer can be told a brand new part has been added, then it can be told a used part has been added - surely its only a code number and my parents car won't know whether that's new or used.

Anyone heard of this? Any URGENT advice please?
