Hello Pauly,welcome to the forum.Sorry for the delayed responce.
The main thing to check with this type of car is how it has been treated in the past.They are obviously a car that is meant to be driven hard,so you need to check for any signs of accident damage(an HPi check is a must) and also check the service history and things like the brake discs,the clutch,etc,etc.I personally would also walk away from anything that had been modified too,especially with cheap air filters,back boxes etc.
There is a wealth of info on here about the 172's and 182's,I'd have a quick search through the posts and they should tell you other points to look for too.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
