Cheers for the replies chaps

I tried changing the battery today - I swapped it for a healthy one out of my Capri - but it made no difference. We then had a go at bump starting the Laguna, which to my surprise worked! But it still wouldn't start on the button, so we gave up and called the AA, expecting to hear that it was something horrendously complicated they couldn't fix.

The fault actually turned out to be nothing more sinister than a corroded connector on the back of the starter solenoid, which was something of a relief as both myself and my dad had visons of a large and expensive bill to fix some obscure electronic component! Mr AA Man cleaned it up and greased it, and now the car starts as it should.

Thanks again for your help!
