MkIV Espace Spongy Brakes.

I wonder if someone could advise please. I have just changed the front pads on the wifes 53 plate 1.9Dci and now the brakes are spongy, I can't remember them being like this before I started. On tickover the brake pedal will steadily travel to the floor when pressed and a rush of what sounds like air can be heard from the front footwell area. The brakes will firm up if pumped and will stop the car. With the ignition turned off the brake pedal is solid when pressed and no rush of air can be heard. When I started, I forgot to slacken off the reservoir cap but the pistons pushed back into the calipers ok.

Have I damaged something or is there something else I need to do. Can't see any external fluid leaks anywhere.

Thank you.
