On the back of the button it will be attached to a little box which is the solenoid (motor). This is what is wired for the central locking to work!
If the lock and solenoid worked in another motor it would suggest to me that something has come adrift and could just need hooking back together.
When you removed the lock, did you have to unhook it from anything??????
Another idea could be that the catches on the boot lip and lid are out of alignment. This could cause the boot to either not lock or not unlock, depending on which way out of alignment they were!
