wierd fuel gauge issue

Ive had this megane 1 for 7 months now and after a recent refulling all looked normal.

The next day when embarking on our journey the fuel gauge wobbled its wentt to about 1/3rd full. Then systermatically over the next 30 minutes it slowly crept up and up and up till beyond the full (it should have only gone to about 3/4). When the ignition is turned off it wobbles slightly and goes higher (not the standard return to the bottom of the guage). when the ignition is turned on again it continues on its journey counter clockwise pointing the wrong way.

If i remove the dashboard and manually move the guage to point back at the bottom and turn the igintion on it points to the right amount of fuel and when i turn it off it returns back to normal. If i drive anywhere (about 2+ mins and then turn the ignition off it wobbles and move c-clockwise slightly and will continue until i reset the pin again.

any ideas on this one would be welcome.
