True, asbestos isn't used any longer in brake pads for the reason mentioned.
Secondly, the squealing is from the pad vibrating in the calliper(as actually researched by Ford I believe). The best way to stop it and I'll swear by this method is using brake pad adhesive. Glue the suckers in.
Seriously though, it's a PBR product out here in Oz and works wonders. I have used it on an R10, Pug 205 SLi, Citroen Xsara 1.8(fronts) 2 Pug 505 wagons(fronts) my Rx4 and a Saab 9000 turbo and not one has squealed afterwards.
I have seen other types of anti-squeal gunk but this stuff I have found to be the most sticky. it's just like regular contact cement and smells the same too, highly toxic I am sure. Check your local brake place or a good parts supplier as it's worth the few dollars.
This would be why the coke worked as it'd be awefully sticky as it dried.
