I once flew to Nuremberg with a colleague who'd forgotten his passport. Actually, he asked me to pick his passport up from his desk at the office and meet him with it at the station, but it wasn't there and (this being in the days when only yuppies had mobiles) I had no way of getting hold of him.
I'm not sure how, but we managed to get him on the plane, and through immigration at the other end. I think we had to get one of the people we were working for to meet us at the airport and vouch for him. They taught him how to say "I've forgotten my passport" in German so that the could recount the amusing anecdote to everyone. He later discovered that they'd taught him to say "I have eaten my passport."
And people say the Germans have no sense of humour
