Took my instrument cluster off the car and opened up the back (seeing as i was going to replace it anyway) and noticed that one of the connections to the coil had burned out (kinda explained the intermittened fault as the thin copper was loose and sometime connected and sometimes not). I tried to re connect it but this was unsucessful and beyond my talent.

after a hunt round the scrapheaps and explaining the difference between a 99 megane and a 96 megane to owners, found a new instrument cluster on ebay . Looked about right so gave it a go (16 inc delivery, bargain). this seems to have fixed the guage. My obvious next problem is that ive gone from about 85000 to 70000 miles.

Just need to give it a proper run out and will update tomorrow.
