Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread!
Following Ralphs advice I went and bought myself a cheap voltage tester (£5 in maplin which will be useful to have) and found that there was no problem with the wiring to the horn, when the steering wheel switch was pressed i got a steady 12v.
Since this meant it was the horn itself that was at fault I headed to my local auto parts specialist and picked up a replacement for £8.00, got home, fitted it and voilą beep beep once again!
£13 quid total seems like a bargain to me, god knows how much they would have charged at a garage!
