I know this reply is a little late but it may help others with the same problem.

Yes, you are right to use a slave battery because if you disconnect the battery altogether then you may have the problem not just with your radio code but also having to reset your windows but more importantly you may have the service light come up and that would mean a visit to your Renault dealer at great expense.
Currently in royrogers's garage:
Mercedes S320, Espace 2.2dci, Peugeot 406 coupe 3.0
